Four Reasons Districts Are Switching to Web-Based Time & Attendance Systems
Odds are you aren't lighting your hallways with torches. You aren't using candles in the cafeteria or lanterns in the classrooms; electricity was discovered quite some time ago. And with that discovery came a new era of industry, innovation and opportunity. That era forever changed the way we work and is rivaled only by the innovation of the Digital Age.
Eluding the Elusiveness of Retention: How to Keep Your Great Performers
Retention is elusive because most districts are challenged to understand who is leaving and why they're leaving, and what to do about it. (The sub-field of Workforce Analytics is starting to enable school districts to refine their HRIS data so as to actually understand the dynamics of retention and attrition of their workforces, and this is an exciting development.)Continue Reading
7 AASPA Conference Takeaways for K-12 HR Leaders
With nearly 400 school district administrators in attendance, AASPA (the American Association for School Personnel Administrators) just wrapped up another great Annual Conference. Hosted in beautiful Portland, Oregon, the AASPA Annual Conference brought together K-12 HR leaders from hundreds of school districts across the country. I find that AASPA is a good indicator of the trends in K-12 and current issues facing personnel administrators. From a comprehensive lineup of 80+ clinics and workshops to the conversations around meals and the exhibit hall, here are the Top 7 Trends I noticed from this year's conference.

A Call for Divergent Leadership
English poet Thomas Gray wrote "Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard" to honor the millions who had died before him, the poor, the hapless, the unrecognized, those who lived and died with little notice from others. In his poem he openly declares a profound respect and appreciation for them, realizing unfortunately that many had natural abilities of greatness that could not reach fruition because they lacked either the finances or the education.Continue Reading

An Outstanding Educator in Front of Them, Every Day
As we get into the swing of another school year, it is useful to ask ourselves: what is our true work as K-12 HR Leaders? Is it to process I-9s? To ensure compliance with FLSA? To attend job fairs, manage position control, and ensure there's a substitute in every classroom every day? As you all know, the answer is "Yes." Yes, to all of the above, and yes to so much more. There is no shortage of tasks that the HR office must do to ensure that it meets its two most basic functions – which are to ensure the district's compliance with employment law and to ensure that positions are filled. But there is a deeper ideal, a more salient reason why we exist - and that is to ensure that every child has an outstanding educator in front of them, every day. And because each school district employee is, at any given moment, an educator – we must not lose sight that our most important responsibility is to ensure excellence in every single hire we make and to unabashedly address performance concerns when they arise. Let's talk today about the first of these two important callings: to ensure that each hire we make is a quality hire.Continue Reading

Building a Best-of-Breed K-12 HR Platform: How School Districts Benefit from a Single Provider for Multiple Services
It wasn't too long ago, during my time as a school administrator, that I found myself walking through the exhibit hall of a large national education conference feeling overwhelmed by the number of vendors and products that were being offered to me and my school district colleagues. While having the opportunity to learn about various products and meet with new vendors is always exciting, anxiety often times exists in the unknown, especially when it comes to buying educational technology software from a vendor with whom you have never worked. Of course, you check references and ask as many questions as you can during the sales process, but, we've all experienced a wonderful sales "pitch," only to be let down once life as a client formally begins. Keep reading to find out how Frontline Technologies is changing this experience and what it means for you!Continue Reading

Guest Post: A Different Approach to the Affordable Care Act
As most districts already know, this is "go time." Like everyone else, we were initially surprised and overwhelmed by the Affordable Care Act requirements and determining what it meant for our organization. After evaluating some traditional routes, we chose a slightly different process for our district, which I hope others will find helpful as we all navigate these waters together!Continue Reading
Teacher Absences & Subs
Teacher Absences Are Under Attack (Again)
The teacher absenteeism issue never dies down for long before it's back in the spotlight again. Last year, it was the Center for American Progress's report that pushed the issue into mainstream media. This time, it's a new report from the National Center on Teacher Quality that has reignited the debate. We can all agree that excessive teacher absences are never a good thing, whether it's the cost to the district or the impact on students. But how concerned should you be about the new report – and what steps should you take in your district?Continue Reading
